What is Dementia?

Dementia in and of itself is not a disease. It is a series of symptoms that accompany a disease. Dementia is a decline in memory and other mental capacities that become severe enough to interfere with the person’s daily life and performing everyday activities.

Dementia affects memory, thinking, learning capability, comprehension, judgement, and language. The cognitive function impairment is commonly accompanied, and sometimes preceded, by changes in behavior, mood, emotions, and motivation.

Dementia can have physical, social, and psychological impacts, not only for the person living with dementia, but also for family and caregivers.

While there are many different diseases that have associated dementia signs and symptoms, Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common form of Dementia and contributes to 60-70% of cases.

Although Dementia mainly affects older adults, it is not a normal part of aging. As we age, some memory loss is normal. We have all on occasion experienced forgetting a name, an appointment, not remembering to pick up an item at the grocery store or where we parked our car. But with Alzheimer’s Disease, there is more than just changes with their memory. They will experience behavioral changes, deterioration in concentration and judgement, as well as confusion. Experiencing these changes can cause anxiety for your loved one.

How our dementia education can help you and your loved one

  • We will assess the current situation and challenges that are related to the care of your loved one. Some of these challenges might include - agitation or aggressive behavior, wandering, refusal with showering or changing of clothing, loss of interest in eating/drinking, sundowning, along with other behaviors that can cause this disease to be so challenging for caregivers. We will create an individualized care plan to assist in managing any challenging behaviors.

  • Observe behavioral interactions and then help assist you in changing unwanted behaviors to cooperative or manageable behaviors.

  • We will assist you in identifying the triggers that create negative outcomes and educate you on the best way to approach and communicate with your loved one, helping to minimize the frustration and anxiety.

  • Advise making minimal changes to the home environment that will promote safety and reduce the risk of falls.

  • As things progress, we will explain what to expect - educating you on the different stages and preparing you for what is next.
